Finding Success in Doing Our Best - No Expectations
"I do my best. At the same time, I know I’m not necessarily in control of the outcome. I won’t lose my confidence if things don’t go my way."
It can be easy for us to get hung up or down on ourselves when things don't work out as we planned or imagined. Especially when we put our all into something - it's hard to see the nonalignment between our efforts and the flow.
Buddhist lama Surya Das says that, "we be perfectly sincere and appreciate things as they are, understand causality and its ethical implications, and try to do our best. For doing our best is the very best any of us can do." I think this is so relevant to this mantra because it is a practice of cultivating honesty and acceptance; ultimately with ourselves. We must realize that the only thing we truly have control over is ourselves - all else is out of our control. The expectations from all others outside of ourselves is a dead-end when seeking fulfillment. They say that peace begins when expectation ends - once we are able to let go of what is out of our control, life becomes easier, there's less pressure, we are able to find contentment with what simply is.
I recognize how hard it can be to accept 'failure' or be okay with the outcome when we did our best but couldn't achieve what we were looking to. However, there is no such thing as failure. In some way, whether we understand it at the time or not - it is the flow just redirecting us or guiding us to something greater, grander. It could also just be a simple lesson for us and motivate us to do even better for the next time. Whatever it is, do not lose confidence just because things don't go your way. It's all apart of the process, all apart of the plan.
"I do my best. At the same time, I know I’m not necessarily in control of the outcome. I won’t loose my confidence if things don’t go my way."
You are perfect, and even if it may not seem like it - it is all happening in your favor. Just keep on keeping on, and always do your best. Let go of assumption and expectation. You are enough. You are right where you need to be.
