"I Am the Captain of my Soul"
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul." -Invictus, by William Ernest Henley
On a podcast I was listening to a few weeks back, they shared insight on breaking free from our tired, old stories of self-defeat and of non-belief in ourselves (podcast at the bottom of this post, take a listen if you have the time!! xx)
They shared a story about how in the circus, they would chain up the baby elephants so that they wouldn't go free and would learn to stay and be trained for the circus. This chain is feeble and small, and this keeps the baby elephant locked up without worry of them escaping. They keep this same chain on them as they become adults - but as they grow, they could easily break from this chain that is confining them, as it is no match for the power of the mature elephant. However, the elephant has been trained since childhood, since it was a baby, that this chain holds it in place and cannot break it; so they never try to break free from the limiting, confining chain that was put on them.
Another story along these lines is about when putting fleas in a jar with a lid on it, they would jump to the top but the lid would stop them. Although they could jump right out of the jar, the lid stops them. Once the lid is taken off, however, the fleas will still, never jump out because they have been trained that they can't get past that point - meanwhile, the top is wide open, waiting for them to jump out.
This may sound like something we've all been through or are still going through in some way or another. How we tell ourselves the same story of why we can't do something, or how we think we don't have enough or just aren't enough to reach our dreams and ambitions. We must realize that we create this vision for ourselves and it is a constant practice to free our minds. Realize that you have been chained, you have been trained like the elephants and the fleas - we cannot let the opinions of others or our own fears and weaknesses enslave us forever.
The first step in manifesting our dreams is to hold trust and believe in our ability- in our potential. The first step to any sort of success or contentment is taking control of our mind and our willpower.
At one point, we have to take over the drivers seat and we must trust that we are capable of taking over the wheel. Many of us may find ourselves stuck here - having never taken the drivers seat, accustomed to having someone give the directions, someone always telling us which way is right or wrong, which way we can or cannot go. Realize when you are being sucked into others' projections and fears, and practice to slowly step away from the negative thinking.
Recognize how attached you are to your old, tired story of pain, suffering, frustration, and victimhood. Let it go.
It might, at first, feel uncomfortable or even terrifying to step into your power - ultimately stepping into your truth. But it takes that huge jump sometimes, but the path is always there for you, all waiting to be unveiled. The Universe wants you to follow your dreams.
You are the driver, in control of the wheel. You are that painter and the canvas is all yours to stroke whatever you desire. Break free from the chains - you are the captain of your soul, the master of your fate.
