The Truth About Plastic
We must integrate a practice in our day-to-day to ditch the conveniences offered by plastic - consume less and always recycle!
92% of Americans six or older test positive for BPA (Bisphenola, chemical to make/added to plastic)
People with the highest exposure to BPA have an increased rate of diabetes and heart disease
Consumed through the chemicals that can be leached from plastic waste into groundwater supply, or even through fish we eat
The largest opposition to the ban of plastic comes from the petroleum industry
Burning of plastic releases toxic fumes harmful to the environment (to us all)
8% of world oil production goes to manufacturing plastics
Plastics take over 1000 years to degrade in landfills - every piece of plastic made still exists today
Plastic is the largest source of ocean litter
Ocean debris worldwide (which 69-90% are from plastic) kills at least 100,000 mammals and 1 million seabirds a year
Interrupt natural habitat and ecosystems (stress, danger, death of animals!)
These are just some quick facts of the harmful effects of plastic - I will be writing a bunch more later on about the steps we can take to consume less plastics and generate less waste. In the meantime, you can find some simple steps to stop using plastic in the section from the bottom of the diagram above.
Truly, (as we always say) the first and greatest step is awareness. With an awareness, world change is already in action. Individual actions add up to be a significant force.. We are the change we want to see!!
